Are Porcelain Veneers Right For Me?

Many people wonder if porcelain veneers are right for them, because they want to improve their smile. In this article, we will discuss some of the factors to consider when thinking about getting veneers.

WHAT ARE VENEERS?

Veneers are shells that fit over your teeth, and they can be comprised of resin or porcelain. The majority of them are made of porcelain, because it has distinct advantages, including the ability to reflect light in a way consistent with natural teeth. They can also be used to correct gaps, change the appearance of crooked teeth, and they can help with the concealment of discolored teeth. In addition, a veneer may be larger in size than the person’s teeth, and they may longer as well.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

Veneers are typically applied in three dental visits. First, you will need to meet with your dentist to discuss the procedure, and he or she will assess your situation to determine if they are right for you. On your second visit, your teeth will be prepared for them by removing a portion of the enamel covering.

The amount taken is usually around half a millimeter, and this is done in order to create room for the veneers and to keep the teeth from looking bulky in appearance.

Next, the dentist will make an impression of your teeth, and your veneers will be custom made in a lab using these measurements. At your third visit, your veneers will be fitted into place and affixed using a special adhesive.

ADVANTAGES TO GETTING VENEERS

Porcelain veneers are nearly indistinguishable from natural teeth, and you will not have to change your diet or avoid coffee, tea, or wine. This is because they are resistant to staining, and although smoking is not recommended, your teeth will not suffer discoloration because of this habit. You can keep more of the original structure of your teeth intact than you would if you chose to go with caps, also called crowns, and you can choose the color you would like for your veneers, as they come in a variety of shades. Experts caution against selecting a dazzling white color, as these will not look authentic.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Insurance companies will not typically cover this procedure, and it is one of the more expensive dental techniques you can have done. You can, however, mitigate this cost by having them placed on only those teeth that are the most visible. Once they are applied, they cannot be reversed, and your teeth may become more sensitive as a result of having the enamel partially skimmed off. They will be durable, but they can chip, and for this reason, biting on nails or on pencils is highly discouraged.
