Whether you are curious about your dentist's educational background or want to pursue the profession, finding out what it takes to become a dentist is simple. Dr. Ronald F. Jacob, DMD is here to help you to know more about this.
In the four sections that follow, we will discuss what it takes to become a dentist and what credentials to look for.

Dental Admission Test

First, determine the testing and prerequisites required for an undergraduate degree. The Dental Admissions Test is required for all prospective dentists (DAT). The American Dental Association (ADA) advises students to take the DAT a year before applying for dental school, usually during their junior year.

Prerequisites for Dental School

In addition to the DAT scores, most students need a good GPA, experience working with a dentist, and excellent recommendation letters. Enrollment does not require a science degree, but students must meet certain requirements from their undergraduate classes. Most programs require eight hours of biology, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, and English as an undergraduate.
The first two years of dental school are usually spent studying. The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) states that the second and third years are clinical years. The exact course of study for a dentist varies from school to school.

Dental Licensure Examinations

Students must pass a series of exams after dental school. The ADA specifies three key requirements for licensure: education, testing, and clinical. Aside from these three elements, each state has its own licensing requirements.

Considering a Dental Speciality

Did you know that 20% of dentists in the US are specialists? Among them are oral surgeons, orthodontists, and pediatric dentists. As previously stated, becoming a specialist requires additional education and clinical experience, sometimes up to six years.
After dental school, exams, and possible postgraduate training, a dentist is ready to practice! They can work as a dentist, teaching patients about daily oral hygiene, diagnosing and treating cavities and other dental issues, and generally helping them maintain the healthiest mouths.
This information should help you understand how to become a dentist. The long road to becoming a dentist is well worth it for those who are passionate about improving oral health. Everyone needs dental care, so this job is in high demand and worthwhile. Call Dr. Ronald F. Jacob, DMD at (386) 445-6111 for any questions.
